Aluminum loop for beverage cans is almost completely closed - material recycling rate of 98.9%.
(August 18, 2015) Used beverage cans with a deposit are mainly returned and recycled via retail outlets. The customer then gets back the deposit of 0.25 euros. If used cans enter the yellow bag they will be separated from other packaging materials by modern sorting plants and afterwards recycled.
Also drink cans that go together with household waste into waste treatment plants are not lost for recycling. Nowadays, the recovery by metal separation is now state of the art. So aluminum components can be recovered even from the slag of thermal treatment plants.
On behalf of the DAVR, GVM Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung mbH, Mainz has calculated the mass flows considering all collection and recycling routes for the year 2013. As a result, the GVM comes to a material recycling rate of 98.9%.
Thus, the aluminum loop for beverage cans is almost completely closed.
