Aluminium beverage can recycling in Europe at 73%
(November 14, 2017) In its latest news, European Aluminium pronounces that the overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans in Europe increased by 1.6% to a new record level of 72.9% in 2014.
That is an important milestone towards the recycling targets of the EU Circular Economy (75% for 2025).
In Europe - including other East countries, Russia and Turkey – nearly 30 billion cans have been recycled – that means every second 1,000 aluminium beverage cans are being recycled somewhere in Europe. Compared to the EU member states, Germany and Finland are at the forefront with a recycling rate of 99%.
The metal stays in the European Circular Economy and is available for producing new aluminium products which takes 95% less energy than producing it from its raw materials and also generates 5% of the greenhouse gas emissions.
Aluminium beverage cans have a high extent to the overall recycling result of all aluminium packaging. According to European Aluminium, it is very important to sensitize all EU member states to collect, sort and recycle more used aluminium packaging in the future to reach the ambitious target of 75%.
Awareness campaigns like ‘Every can counts’ show how to collect and recycle ‘out of home’ for example at workplace, festivals or other outdoor events. It is expected that more countries will join ‘Every Can counts’ in the future.
